UNITED TENNIS CLUB
PLEASANT OPENING DAY. BIG ATTENDANCE AT COURTS ON SATURDAY. There was a,very large attendance of members and visitors when the United Lawn Tennis Club, formed by the amalgamation for the present season of the Masterton and Memorial tennis clubs, opened its season on the Masterton courts on Saturday. In mild and bright spring weather, the gathering was pleasant and enjoyable in all respects. The courts were in splendid order. In the absence of the president, Mr. J. Jameson, the courts were declared open by Mr. J. A. Kennedy, vice-presi-dent. Mr. Kennedy said they were making an experiment which might become historic. Two of the largest tennis clubs in the Wairarapa had decided to amalgamate this season. It was for the body of members to determine the fate and outcome of the experiment. Mr. Kennedy offered a hearty welcome to the visitors and also to the members of the two amalgamating clubs. At Mr. Kennedy’s request, the first ball was hit over the net by Mrs. W. A. Michael, and the courts were formally declared open for the season. A Yankee tournament of combined doubles was played during the afternoon, by F. Phillips and Miss McLaren, to whom prizes were presented by the club vice-presidents, Messrs. Kennedy and H. M. A. Major. The numerous company of players and visitors was entertained at afternoon tea by the wife of the president. Mrs. J. Jameson. /
The United Club has opened its season with happy prospects and seems likely to maintain a large and active membership. The establishment of a regular ladies’ day during the week is already engaging the attention of the ladies’ committee.
