THE FUTURE OF EUROPE RECENT HITLER-PETAIN TALK. ANNOUNCEMENT LIKELY IN FEW DAYS. t) (Received This Day, 12:40 p.m.) BERLIN, October 25. A spokesman indicated that cony firmation of the Hitler-Petain talk i- might possibly be given on Monday, I-, when there may be revealed: “A new n European order upon which the nightii mare of foreign interference will be •- dispelled." The spokesman added: e “Exterior influences have been trying to stick .their noses into affairs which don’t concern them." Correspondents asked for a definition of the influences and the spokesman replied: “England.” He continued: “In the Europe of the future, who was a friend or enemy of yestert day will be of no importance and the sole determining factor will be the wholeheartedness with which every • State within the new order co-oper-j ates.” As an indication of co-opera-tion the spokesman pointed io the chivalrous treatment the Germans had accorded Marshal Petain. Marshal Goering's paper, “National Zeitung,” says: The Vichy Government seeks to end France’s isolation but such an anschluss is only achiev-
able through the victor, Germany. Thi present talks, which are only prelim inary, are rooted in the French real isation of this fact. It is reported that preparations an being made for a meeting of thi Reichstag at which Herr Hitler wil make a declaration concerning hi: talks with France and Spain. U.S.A. ATTITUDE TOWARDS FRANCE AND AXIS. WARNING TO VICHY. (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 25. M. Henry Haye visited the State Department at the request of Mi Sumner Welles, who outlined the United States’s attitude towards closei collaboration between France and the Axis. Diplomatic sources have declared that the United States Government has warned the Vichy Government not to expect American aid and sympathy in the event of famine if the Vichy Government makes an alliance or other arrangement helpful to the Axis. It is reliably stated that the United States is co-operating with the other Americas and has plans ready to occupy French territory in the Caribbean area if deemed necessary from the viewpoint of the defence of the hemisphere. BELGIUM’S FATE KING RECEIVES GERMANS. IMPROVED ADMINISTRATION PROMISED. (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, October 25. A Rome radio message stated that King Leopold of Belgium recently received German and Belgian representatives, for negotiations concerning the future of Belgium. The Germans, it is stated, agreed to certain improvements in the administration of the country.
