MARTINBOROUGH

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL CONCERT. ("Times-Age” Special.) The annual concert of the Martinborough District High School was held in the Town Hall last night. There vzas a crowded house. A most enjoyable entertainment was given by the pupils, and applause was frequent throughout. The curtain rose to a display by the infants, followed by singing of Standard 1 and 2 pupils. Verse speaking by Standard 3 and 4 traversed a variety of items and proved very interesting. A one-act play “Legend,” in which the characters were capably sustained by Joan Findlay, Gwenda Smith, Gwen Lister and Ken Busch, concluded the first portion of the programme. The second part of the entertainment comprised verse speaking by Forms 1 and 2, which was followed by a very fine exhibition of drill, the acrobatic features being exceptionally well done. Forms 1 and 2 rendered several concerted vocal items. The performance concluded with a one-act comedy entitled "Dear Old Uncle Amos” in which the various characters were portrayed by Roy Munn, Peggy Colton, Stanley Trounce, Sibyl Clarke, Valerie Shirley, Peter Craig and Gordon Hardie. Before the fall of the curtain, Mr E. C. Sadd, chairman of the School Committee, expressed thanks to the staff of the school for the excellent entertainment provided, and to the parents and those who had helped to make the concert so successful. BOY SCOUTS DEN ACQUIRED. After passing through a trying period, the Boy Scout troop has at last acquired a “den” for their parades and work. Under Scoutmaster Foreman, the troop is growing weekly, and now has a membership of about 30, with a prospective increase in the near future. One of the rooms in the building has been placed aside as a workshop, where the boys can do any work they desire. They will have several articles on exhibition at the Rose and Sweet Pea Show next week. Swimming Baths. Though they will not be officially opened till next month, the Borough Council has decided to permit the use of the baths in the interim. Mr W. Wadsworth has been appointed caretaker;-- Rules for the control of the baths have been drawn up, and charges for club and season tickets fixed. Hours for the school children, public, and the swimming club have been arranged, with special provision for ladies’ hours on two days a week.
