ITALIAN WARSHIPS

OPERATIONS IN RED SEA SMALL SQUADRON MUCH DIMINISHED. IN SPITE OF PROTECTION OF BATTERIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 23. The “Daily Telegraph” says that though surprise is being expressed that Italian naval forces are able to operate in the Red Sea, it may not. be appreciated that Italy, at the outbreak of war, had a small squadron based at Massawa. It comprised several destroyers and a number of submarines. It is believed that few of the latter ha've survived. The destroyers have so far prudently remained in port, where they are safe under the protection of shore batteries and minefields.
