OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
HEART TO HEART APPEAL (To the Editor.) Sir. —This evening our worthy Mayor called a meeting of all those desirous of helping in the heart to heart appeal for Provincial Patriotic Funds about to be launched. The citizens of Masterton flocked along to this meeting in a manner which, is perhaps, unique in our Dominion. Fifteen persons in all made up the audience, five ladies and ten gentlemen, and two of these gentlemen came many miles from out in the country. Is this the best effort the people of Masterton can make? Surely not! Would we like our boys overseas to know how little interest the average citizen takes in their welfare.
Our boys in England, in Egypt, in the air and on the sea are facing unknown dangers and hardships. They are doing this for you and for me and doing it cheerfully. When the test comes they will not let us down. Arc we at home going to let them down? It is time each and every one of us awakened to the fact that we at home owe a debt of honour to our fighting forces. A debt that we ought to pay willingly and gladly. The soldier pays in hardship and in blood. We are not asked to pay in this manner, but in service and in cash. We ought to pay, and pay till it hurts; it is the least we can do. The appeal for Patriotic Funds will be launched in Masterton shortly. Let us all open our hearts, dip deep into our pockets, and show our boys that we do remember and appreciate the sacrifices they are making on our behalf.— Yours, etc., “DINK.” Masterton, October 24.
