CLAIMED BY CHINESE OVER JAPANESE FORCES. ENGAGEMENTS ON VARIOUS FRONTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, October 23. A Shanghai despatch says Chinese regulars and guerrillas are engaged in a battle with the Japanese on a 1500 miles front from the north. In Southern China they report many victories. Large numbers of Japanese were withdrawn from the north recently for concentration at Hainan Island, where it is reported several hundred thousand men are awaiting a “golden opportunity.” The Japanese are heavily reinforcing the Licheng district in SouthEastern Shansi, where the Chinese claim to have stormed Langsi, 75 miles northward of Wuhu, killing 2000 Japanese troops. The Associated Press of Great Britain’s Shanghai correspondent says Japanese reports indicate that the Chinese are continuing effective military operations on various fronts, fighting" 2889 engagements in September. BRITISH SUBJECT KILLED DURING AIR RAID ON KUNMING. TRAFFIC ON BURMA ROAD CONTINUES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, October 23. A British subject, Mr Arthur Lewis Pollard Urquhart, died at Kunming as a result of a Japanese air raid on the Burma Road.
A message from Chungking says. Despite Japanese bombing, the traffic on the Burma Road remains unaffected. Only minor damage has been suffered. ____
