PHYSICAL CULTURE

DISPLAY IN Y.M.C.A. GYMNASIUM. KEEN PUBLIC INTEREST. A physical culture display, which terminated the 1940 season, presented in the gymnasium of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. last night by the instructors of the gymnasium classes was considered the best effort for many years. Keen public interest was taken in the display, there being an attendance of over 300. Many could not gain admittance. The hall was decorated with flags lent by the Borough Council. The programme presented was both varied and interesting. Proceedings opened with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand." followed by an exhibition on the “Horse” by the junior, intermediate and senior boys. Other items of interest included in the programme were drill, matwork and rings, and parallel and horizontal bar work. A jiu-jitsu exhibition, a camp scene and a tableau were also popular numbers. Many favourable comments were passed on the value and the high standard of the training received by the children and generous applause was accorded the performers by an appreciative audience. An outstanding item was a gymnastic display by Messrs Tatton Bros. The chairman of the board of directors of the Y.M.C.A.. Mr E. M. Hodder, extended a welcome to the spectators and congratulated them on the interest being taken in the work of the Y.M.C.A. Mr Hodder also thanked the instructors for their services.

The sum of approximately £7 was raised by a voluntary collection, which would be used for furthering the work of the “Keep Fit" department. Mr Avon Tatton was supervisor. Miss R. Edwards, F.P.E.S. (N.Z.) instructress to the girls classes. Messrs J. A. Kennedy and S. L. Hatch instructors. Mr. R. R. Edwards jiu-jitsu instructor, and Mrs W. G. Perry was pianiste. Reference was made to the work of Miss of the Wairarapa College staff, for her assistance during Miss Edwards's absence.

The Mayor of Masterton. Mr T. Jordan. who was patron, was unable to be present owing to urgent business in Wellington. The general secretary. Mr C. V. Gaze, wishes to thank all who assisted in the successful running of the display.
