MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. SCREENING OF PICTURES ON. CHRISTMAS DAY. Th monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held in Masterton last night. The Mayor. Mr T. Jordan, was in the chair. There were also present Councillors G. D. Wilson, W. White. R. Russell. H. E. Gardner, J. Ninnes. A. D. Low. A. T. Jackson. W. Kemp. G. W. Moi’ice. W. H. Judd and Trevor Beetham. The matter of permitting the Regent and Cosy Theatres. Masterton. to screen programmes on the night of Christmas Day was considered. An objection was received from the Theatrical Employees’ Union. It was decided that permission be granted, subject to the approval of the programme by a committee consisting of Councillors Beetham. Gardener and Ninnes. Councillors Russell and Gardener spoke against the screening of pictures on Christmas Day. The letter from the Union was received.
An application from the Primary Schools' Sports’ Association for the use of four cricket pitches on the Park Oval on Friday afternoons was granted. A similar request received from the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club for the use of the Oval for meetings on Wednesday nights, and the use of training facilities was also granted. The Loyal Masterton Lodge of Odd Fellows wrote thanking the council for the free use of the Municipal Hall for a patriotic dance. The letter was received, and it was decided to congratulate the Lodge upon the satisfactory result of the function. The Masterton Branch of the Plunket Society and the Masterton Y.M.C.A. wrote acknowledging donations received from the council and expressing appreciation. Arising out of a claim made by Mr F. W. Dixon, Masterton, for compensation for an accident due to injuries received through coming into collision with a cleaning rod used in connection with the water main lining work, it was decided that the contractors be written to drawing their attention to the claim and asking that the matter be settled in a satisfactory manner with the claimant. A. grant of £2 2s was made to the Royal Humane Society. It was decided to call applications for the seasonal appointment of custodian for the Dixon Street baths, the works and finance committee being empowered to make the appointment. Members of the council considered that the early opening of the baths was desirable. The matter of replacing two canoes on the Park Lake was discussed and it was agreed to build two new skiffs and offer the two canvas canoes for sale. Advice was received from the Director of Housing Construction that his department was prepared to recommend to the Minister of Housing that the department, would meet the cost of laying the unused gas main, less salvage costs, in the Tararua Government housing block. Mr J. Y. Douglas, gas manager, reported that the cost of laying the- main was £135 5s 6d, the estimated salvage being £5l 18s, leaving the sum of £73 7s 6d as being due to the council. The offer was accepted. The following remit was passed for the next Municipal conference: "That the exemption from Stamp Duty on agreements granted electric power boards or other electricity suppliers and purchasers of electrical equipment, as provided in the Stamp Duties Amendment Act, 1927, be extended to include gas works and purchasers of gas equipment.”
