ALFREDTON
TENNIS CLUB MEETING ELECTION OF OFFICERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The members of the Alfreflton Tennis Club held their annual meeting over the weekend. The secretary submitted the following annual report: During the season there were 46 active members, comprising 23 men, 16 ladies and 7 juniors. The club regrets that no interclub matches were possible owing to adverse weather conditions, although the competitions were keenly contested, particularly the championships. The committee wishes to take this opportunity of thanking the donors of the cups and congratulating the winners, Mrs McKay and John Hull, and further to thank Mrs R. Low and Mr T. Smith who donated the trophies for the run-ners-up in the championships, Mrs Seymour and Mr J. Shirtcliffe. The button matches were well contested, the winners being Mrs R. Low and W. Algie. The committee desire to express appreciation to those who gave donations in lieu of help with the provision of afternoon teas. During the season the club was fortunate in securing the services of Mr R. Howe, who gave demonstrations and coaching lessons. During the season management committee meetings were held at regular intervals. The committee decided to replace one net at a cost of £2 8s and, as the nets are now in good order, replacements should not be necessary during the coming season. The season concluded with the club having the credit balance of £6 12s 9d. The report is signed by A. J. Shirtcliffe (hon. secretary and treasurer). The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr T. Smith; president, Mrs S. M. George; vice-presi-dents, last year’s officers were all reelected; management committee, last year’s committee was re-elected with the exception of Mrs H. Burch who declined nomination and with the addition of Mrs McKay and Mr E. Hutchings; secretary, Mr J. Shirtcliffe (reelected). The senior subscriptions were fixed at 6s and 3s as was the case last year, and the junior subscriptions were reduced by 6d. Mr R. Lowe was elected captain and Mr H. Burch vice-captain. Mrs R. Lowe was elected ladies’ captain and Mrs McKay vice-captain. The opening of the season was fixed for October 27 when a tournament will be held, and visitors will be made welcome. Thirty members were present at the meeting and a vote of thanks to the secretary was proposed by Mr Lowe, who was in the chair, and this was carried by acclamation. First Wool of Season. The first two loads of wool for the season left the district today. In several sheds shearing is in full swing. This is no doubt due to the fact that the; shearers of the district have outside sheds to go to later in the season, there being fewer available shearers. Personal. Mr and Mrs P. H. Donovan are visiting Wellington and hope to visit Nelson also.
