FEATHERSTON

TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Featherston Tennis Club was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall when Mr U. H. Allen (president) presided over a good attendance of members. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron. Mr R. W. Matthews; president, Mr H. C. Hunter; vice-presi-dents, Misses Card and Viles. Messrs J. W. Card, N. C. C. Shepherd, H. R. Bloxam, Allen, D. H. S. Riddiford. H. Buck. W. H. Rowles and Dr G. S. Sharp; secretary and treasurer,. Mr A. W. White; club captain, Mr H. C. Hunter; auditor, Mr J. M. G. McKenzie; grounds committee, Messrs H. C. Hunter and A. W. White. It was decided to call a general meeting of members on occasions of necessity, owing to the considerable fall in numbers of the club membership during the past two years. Mr J. Boddington, of Masterton, is to be requested to act as delegate to the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association. Mr H. Buck was appointed delegate to the Combined Sports Committee. Seven new members were elected. The subscriptions were fixed at the same amount as in the previous season; after December 1 5s will be added to the amount due. ' The secretary agreed to accept part payments of not less than 10s in the case of those unable to contribute immediately. The afternoon teas are to be under the supervision of convenors, changed each two weeks. The charge for afternoon tea is to be 3d, while on match days ladies will be required to bring a plate and men donate Is. The care of the courts was left in the hands of Mr Jepson, but members will be required to take enough interest in the club to keep the cost of upkeep and wages as low as possible. The question of preference on the courts was considered and it was resolved that after 5 p.m. on week days senior players should have preference. Further, it was resolved that no persons should retain possession of a court for more than half an hour while others were waiting. The opening day was not fixed, but it is expected that the grounds committee will decide on the first or second Saturday in November. The courts require much attention and the sooner members join in the task of improving them, the sooner play will commence. It was decided that in order to stimulate interest in tennis activities, a social be held in the Parish Hall prior to the opening day. Horticultural Society. A challenge cup has been donated by Mrs Chas. Elgar, Fernside, to the Featherston Horticultural Society for an aggregate prize in classes 1,2, 3 and 4. The cup will shortly be on view in Mr Hardie’s window. Personal. The Rev J. T. Holland is attending the Anglican Synod in Wellington. Post and Telegraph Department. The Featherston Post and Telegraph Office will be closed in all branches on Labour Day with the ex-' ception of the telephone exchange, which will remain open continuously. On Saturday evening the Post Office will be open between 7 o’clock and 8 o’clock for the transaction of telegraph and postal business, including the sale of postal notes. Mails usually despatched on Monday will close at 8 o’clock on Saturday evening.
