CARTERTON

FAREWELL GATHERING PRESENTATION TO MR R. HALL. (“Times-Age” Special.) At Messrs Gordon Hughan’s Ltd. motor establishment yesterday afternoon, one of the stall, Mr R. R. Hall, son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Hall, of Somerset Road, Carterton, who has joined up with the motor cycle platoon of a Scottish regiment, and who will leave tomorrow to go into training as an N.C.0.. was met and made a presentation. Mr Harry Hughan, manager, referred to the fact that Mr Hall, who had been with the firm for the past two years, had been a faithful employee and they were sorry that he was leaving. At the same time they were proud to know that he had decided to "join up." On behalf of the staff he handed the guest a fountain pen and pencil and from the management he asked his acceptance of a handsome leather pocket wallet. Mr Hall’s health was toasted with musical honours. Mr Hall suitably replied. The singing of • "Auld Lang Sync" brought the gathering to a close. BOWLING OFFICIAL OPENING OF GREEN. The official opening of the Carterton Bowling Club’s green will take place on Saturday next. Visitors from district clubs have signified their intention of being present. Members are asked to note it will be a general tea day. Parcel Evening. Residents of Parkvale and district on Saturday evening next will tender a “parcel evening” to Mrs L. Mead (nee Miss Ila Booth) who was born in the district and was recently married. As the guest of the evening is very popular among her friends there is sure to be a large attendance. Dance at Dalefield. On Monday night next a long-night dance will be held in the Dalefield Hall, in aid of the hall funds. The music will be supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton and Mr G. Harding, and the supper will be a feature of the dance. Boy Scouts. Under the guidance of Scoutmaster Fairbrother, the Carterton troop is increasing in numbers. On Monday night 41 boys paraded. Patriotic Concert. A patriotic concert arranged by Miss Nola Woods, of Wellington, assisted by members of the Carterton Savage Club will be held tonight. The contributions to the programme will include Miss Woods’s pupils. A similar concert arranged by Miss Woods and held in Masterton recently, was a great success. The proceeds will be for patriotic purposes. It was inadvertently stated in error in yesterday’s issue that an item would be given by Miss Stubbings’s Percussion Band. Definition ot a Cow. Last evening a drover was taking cows along Belvedere Street when two boys riding the same cycle were discussing the cows, and one was overheard to say: “Well, the only thing I know about a cow is it has four quarters and a leg on each corner.”
