WOMEN’S INSTITUTES HALF YEARLY COUNCIL MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The half yearly council meeting of the Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes will be held in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, on Friday, commencing at 10.30 a.m . Delegates from the seventeen Institutes in the Federation are expected to attend and they will be formally by Mrs F. W. Joblin (president), Mrs B. Renall (president of the “hostess” institute), and Mr D. L. Taverner (Mayor of Carterton), followed by Mr F. Court, chairman of the Wairarapa South County Council, after which the business of the meeting will proceed. The Parkvale Women’s Institute will be hostess assisted by the MatarawaDalefleld Institute and the 'Carterton Institute. SOLDIERS HONOURED PRESENTATION OF GIFTS. A gathering was held yesterday afternoon in the Borough Council Chambers at which two local members of the Field Ambulance were the guests. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided, and there was a good attendance of citizens. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. E. Ordish, E. M. Gayfer. Miss Wolters and Mr H. B. Keenan, members of the entertaining committee, who were unable to be present. The Mayor said they were gathered to entertain two members of the Seventh Field Ambulance Corps who had only been in camp for a very short period. They, extended to the two young soldiers, Private lan J. Mackie and Private P. C. Bond,, their good wishes, and the hope that they would safely return to Carterton. On behalf of the citizens he had pleasure in asking their guests to accept a wristlet watch and safety razor each. Mrs P. Beere, on behalf of the League of Mothers, and Mrs H. Hodder on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, wished both soldiers the best of luck and a safe return and presented each with a parcel of woollen goods from the respective institutions. Privates Mackie and Bond, who suitably replied, were accorded musical honours.
INTERHOUSE CONTEST CARTERTON TEAM. Carterton (represented by Messrs and Co’s, staff) has entered a .team of girls for the interhouse competitions which will be held in Masterton on Labour Day. Ten girls will constitute the team and they have been in training for the event for some time under the capable instruction of Mr M. W. Worsfold. ORDER OF DRUIDS MEETING OF TOTARA LODGE. Totara Lodge No. 3, United Ancient Order of Druids, met last night, Arch. Druid Bro. W. Fryer, presiding over a good attendance. The Stonehenge Lodge, of Masterton, advised that Grand Lodge officers would visit them on Monday next, October 28, and invited the Totara Lodge members to attend. Seventeen members notified their intention of attending. The Social Security Department forwarded sick allowance of £A to two members to be paid in addition to sick pay from the lodge. Sick pay (£24 4s 8d) and Grand Lodge quarterage (£B4 17s 9d) were passed for payment. The return for quarter ended August was read, showing that 240 benefit members were financial on the books of the lodge. Bro. Francis. Corlett notified that he had not yet left New Zealand with the Expeditionary Force, of which he was a member. The District President, Bro. A. Stretton. reported he had paid visits- to Fernleaf Lodge. Greytown, and Stonehenge Lodge. Masterton, and that he was impressed with the progress shown by both lodges. PATRIOTIC CONCERT ARRANGED BY MISS NOLA WOODS Miss Woods, who recently arranged a concert in Masterton for patriotic purposes, has decided, that the concert be repeated in Carterton, the funds to be donated to the Provincial PatrioticFunds. The function when given in the Opera House, Masterton. was attended by a large and appreciative audience and was voted to be one of the best staged for years in Masterton. The performers will include Miss Woods's dancing Carterton pupils 12 in number, numbers by the Carterton Savage Club and Miss Stubbings’s percussion band who were given an excellent reception at the competitions in Wellington, and again at Masterton. The price of admission is Is 6d. Ladies’ Bow'ing Club. The meeting called for the purpose of forming a Ladies’ Bowling Club in Carterton was held in the club’s pavilion yesterday afternoon and although attended by only a few ladies, was enthusiastic in character. Miss C. Berrill, convenor of the meeting, outlined the’ proposal and it was decided that a ladies’ branch of the local club be formed. Mrs C. C. Callender was elected president. Twelve names for membership were handed in and there was a promise of many more. This augurs well for the success of the new venture in Carterton. The green which is in very good order, will be officially opened in
the near future. In the meantime members and intending members will be allowed to play on the green. Farewell Gathering. A number of friends gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs Whitehead, Wyndham Street, Carterton, last evening. to bid them .farewell as they will shortly leave Carterton for Wairoa, to which place Mr Whitehead has been transferred. On behalf of those present, Mr Bennett asked Mr and Mrs Whitehead to accept an electric bedroom lamp, and in doing so wished them the best of luck. Mr Whitehead suitably replied. Games and singing was indulged in. Supper was provided, the singing of "Auld Lang Syne” brought a pleasant gathering to a close. Personal Items. 'On Saturday night a very enjoyable time was spent at the home of Mrs F. Morris, Rhodes Street, the occasion being the 21st birthday of her married daughter, Mrs Moorcock. Dancing and singing were enjoyed. There were 30 guests at the party and Mrs Moorcock received many gifts. At midnight the party was brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syne.'" Mr Colin Sewell, a very old resident of Carterton. acting under medical advice, has entered the Greytown Hospital for treatment.
