BALKAN MENACE

EASIER VIEW TAKEN IN TURKEY NO SIGNS OF AN EARLY GERMAN ADVANCE. LIMITED NUMBERS OF TROOPS IN RUMANIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 20. The Istanbul correspondent of “The Times” says the Turkish mind is now easier about the Balkan situation. The number of German troops being sent to Rumania does not suggest that the Germans plan an early further advance. According to reliable information reaching Turkey, the number of Germans in Rumania does not exceed 20,000, and it is doubtful whether the number still en route is over 20,000. Military planes observed flying over Bucharest since the German occupation, the correspondent states, have been nearly all Rumanian machines. It is not believed that Germany can spare many planes for Rumania. Doubtless the Germans are not averse to reading reports in the foreign Press that there are 200,000 German troops in Rumania, ’ with hundreds of aircraft. , Such stories give two or three German divisions an intimidation value of twelve divisions. THE AXIS & GREECE. It is believed that the reported visit of Italian and German Ministers to the Greek Premier, General Metaxas, with a series of demands also originated in circles which are interested in creating an atmosphere of alarm, of which the Axis would take advantage. There is always Axis pressure on Greece, besides other Balkan States. Well-informed Turks express the opinion that this is being accentuated, but in view of the present military situation, and also the Axis desire not to start war in the Balkans, Turks think that Greece can continue to resist the pressure. There is no indication from Greece that either the Government or the people is departing from its firm determination to preserve the country's genuine independence. Greece is not helpless. The British Naval Command in the Mediterranean is keeping close watch on developments, and an attack on Greece would be followed by active counter-measures. The Rumanian oil wells are within bombing distance from a number of places under Greek sovereignty. Turkey, too, is continuing her precautions and is concentrating troops on her European frontiers. The official Turkish radio, commenting on the Balkan situation, has reaffirmed Turkey’s determination to resist Axis encroachments. TURKEY & THE SOVIET. Referring to Russia, the Turkish radio says: “Russia may feel completely indifferent to the fate of the Balkan States, but this will not prevent these States from taking the stand they have decided upon. Greecd stands united and determined.” Another Turkish paper states: “In this nation-wide danger there is one remedy, namely conquest of the fear of death in the first phase of the struggle. Men must realise that instead of dying in dishonour it is better to die an honourable death.” An Associated Press report from Bucharest says that the Rumanian authorities have asked Spain and Yugoslavia for the extradition of two people —the former chief of the Bucharest police, and the head of the staff of King Carol’s household. These, are among seven high officials of King Carol’s Government who are reported to be charged, in absence, with murder in connection with the death of the Iron Guard leader who was killed just over a year ago.
