SIRENS SOUND
ALARM- IN AUCKLAND ON ACCOUNT OF UNFOUNDED REPORT. CIRCULATION OF WILD RUMOURS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Naval sirens were sounded in Auckland at an early hour yesterday morning. The reason for it was explained by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, .who said a report had been received which led to the belief that there was a possibility of an enemy raider having been located. The necessary precautions were therefore taken at once, but on inquiry the report was found to be without foundation. An Auckland message states that as has been proved before when an event out of the normal occurs rumour had full play. Some of the stories circulated by people who could not reasonably be expected to be in a position to know the facts were almost beyond belief, but too often they found ready listeners, who passed them on with an assurance that the details had emanated from what were termed most reliable authorities.
