POTATO MARKET
POSITION IN CANTERBURY. A DISASTROUS SEASON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 18. It appears fairly certain that the potatoes to be shipped from Timaru for Sydney within the next week will be the last to be exported from New Zealand this season. This shipment of about 650 tons, will bring total exports for the season to 5830 tons, 5000 tons being the quota under the first export arrangement and 180 tons having been sent away recently. Since the yield of table potatoes (from holdings of one acre of greater cutside borough boundaries) was estimated by the Government Statistician at 100,300 tons, exports were a very small proportion. Many growers have been left with a substantial part of their crops on their hands, some with the greater part. One grower has reported that he still has 100 tons. While this quantity would have been worth something more than £lOOO at this stage of last season, it is not this season worth the cost of digging. Merchants who have been in the trade for many years cannot remember a more disastrous season for the grower. The recent better inquiry for grass seeds has been maintained, without any change in prices.
