SUCCESSFUL RAIDS
BY BRITISH AIR FORCES IN AFRICA SHIPS BOMBED AT BENGHAZI. CAMPS & BARRACKS ALSO ATTACKED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, ,1.28 p.m.) RUGBY. October 18. “Successful air operations were carried out by our aircraft on the night of October 16, in a raid on Benghazi,” states a R.A.F. communique issued in Cairo. “Direct hits were observed on two ships unloading at the quayside. A third ship is believed to have been hit. Near Solium, motor transport concentrations were bombed, but the full extent of the damage has not yet been ascertained. “An attack on an enemy camp at Sofafi, south of Buqbuq was also delivered. All the bombs fell in the target area. “On the night of October 16, a raid was made on Derna, where military barracks were hit by incendiary and high-explosive bombs. “In Abyssinia, successful attacks were made on Gonda, 30 miles north of Lake Tana, Tessenia, on the SudanAbyssinia border- and Kassala.” SOUTH AFRICANS ACTIVE ENEMY BASES IN ABYSSINIA BOMBED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.28 p.m.) RUGBY, October 18. An official communique from Nairobi states: “Our patrols again made contact with the enemy in the neighbourhood of Liboi. Neghelli. in Abyssinia, was again successfully raided by the South African Air Force on Wednesday. A Caproni machine was badly damaged and direct hits were registered on aerodrome buildings.” A. & P. AFFAIRS 4, . CARTERTON SHOW. MEETING OF COMMITTEE TODAY. Mr J. A. McLeod presided over a large attendance of the general committee of the Wairarapa P.- and A. Society held at Carterton this morning. The treasurer reported the finances of the Society to be in credit to the extent of £361 15s 5d at the Bank of New Zealand and £448 14s 4d at the Post Office Savings Bank. Votes of condolence were passed to Messrs W. G. Hodder, Geo E. Reynolds, H. L. Griffiths and W. L. Coleman in their recent bereavements. , The chairman stated that Mr Colin McLeod, a member of the committee, was attending his last meeting that day prior to his leaving for active service. A vote of thanks was accorded to those who had given donations or medals to the Society. The secretary reported that donations towards the show were well up to last year. A vote of thanks was accorded to canvassers for their services. It was resolved that harness horses be judged on the first day of the show; It was decided that all soldiers in uniform be admitted free to the show. Messrs J. B. Mac Ewan and Co. Ltd., forwarded a donation of £4 4s. It was decided that Mr Len Wilton, of Masterton, be asked to judge the grade dairy cattle. A tug of war was arranged against a team from the Masterton A. and P. Society. This event will be held directly after the stock parade. Mr McLeod was appointed to take charge of the Carterton team. Mr R. Fortune, of Timaru, wrote stating that he would not be able to attend the show with his dogs this year owing to an outbreak of distem-, per. The tender of G. T. B. Williams, of Woodville, was accepted for the publican’s booth on the grounds. The headmaster of the Petone West School wrote notifying that children from Petone, Upper Hutt and Stokes Valley schools would attend the show. It was decided that the children be admitted free. Thirteen new members were elected and one resignation was accepted. The secretary reported that the entries were well up to those of recent years. It was decided to engage the Carterton Band to supply music at Ihe show. It was resolved that a working bee be held at the showgrounds on Monday, October 28. It was decided that the three winning dogs in the sheep dog trials give an exhibition after the tug of war.
