BOWLING

MASTERTON CLUB. (Notes by "The Bowler.”) On Saturday afternoon next at 1.30 o’clock many bowlers and their friends will wend theix- way to the Masterton Club greens, where the official opening will take place. Naturally, bowlers and especially members of the Masterton Club, are looking forward with pleasure to again taking up that grand old game of bowls. The Masterton Club was first opened in the year 1899 by the late Mr C. A. Pownall, and as the club has been noted for its hospitality and sportsmanship. I expect to see the greens well filled with local and other bowlers. Fox- some years past the Masterton Club has allowed any person, who has not previously been a member of a bowling club, to join up with the club for the first year on payment of approximately one-half the ordinary subscription, and this will be adhered to during the present season. Intending players will be taken in hand by some of the old bowlers and initiated into the game. The club's secretary, Mi' W. Vowell, will be pleased on application to give full particulars to all intending members. The greens are in good order. The surroundings have also had careful attention and the general appearance is most gratifying, and for these the club's greenkeeper and custodian are to be congratulated. During the winter months many of the older members have put in their afternoons at the pavilion playing snooker and bridge. The club's president. Mr H. H. Daniell. and the committee extend a cordial invitation to all bowlers and intending bowlers to be present at the opening ceremony, and they can be assured of a hearty welcome. On Saturday we will miss our popular president of the past two years (Mr V. Gooding), who has gone into camp. I need hardly remind Masterton Club members that it is customary on opening day to take along a plate of cakes.
