Berliners Sent Into Shelters for Many Hours NUMBER OF ATTACKS ON BRITAIN FEW PLANES ALLOWED TO REACH LONDON The R.A.F. penetrated deeply into the heart of Germany on Monday night, when operations extended over a wide area, including Berlin and districts in north-east Germany, a 8.8. C. broadcast reports. Some of the bombers which had special targets in view were unable to reach them on account of bad weather conditions and therefore bombed other objectives, including docks, railway centres and factories. The raid on Berlin sent the people to their shelters for many hours. A large gas works three miles from the centre of the city was attacked, heavy calibre bombs being dropped, a large fire breaking out and spreading rapidly. Many tons of high explosive and incendiary bombs were dropped on military objectives in the centre of Berlin. Later reports show that the attacks on other centres were much more successful than was first reported. Four British planes are missing.
