Mr L. Bennett, of Port Albert, North Auckland, is the guest of the Rev. H. S. and Mrs Kings, of Masterton.
The death has occurred of the wellknown novelist, Helen de Guerry Simpson, after a short illness, a London cablegram states. The Hon H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Housing, will leave Wellington tomorrow for Napier. He expects to return to Wellington on Sunday afternoon.
The Hon D. G. McMillan, Minister of Marine, will leave Wellington tonight for the South Island. He expects to return to Wellington about the middle of next week.
The death occurred today at Masterton of Trevor Keith Ritchie, aged two years and 10 months, a son of Mr and Mrs N. K. Ritchie, of Tinui. The funeral will take place at Tinui tomorrow at 11 a.m.
The Rev Percy Paris, for the past six years minister at Wesley Church and chairman of the Wellington Methodist District, has accepted a very hearty invitation to remain in his present charge for a seventh year. Mr J. G. Hanaghan, the Placement Officer in Masterton, has resigned from that position, as at the end of this month, to take up an appointment with the firm of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Australasia, Ltd. The following casualty in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was announced yesterday:—Private Roy Clifford Strachan, of the Twenty-second Wellington Battalion, died in England on October 10, 1940. Mother: Mrs H. M. Strachan. Lees Road. Taradale.
The death occurred in Wellington yesterday of Mrs Caroline Wilson, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Isaac Cripps, of Sevenoaks, Tinui. The late Mrs Wilson, who was twice married, was born at Mataikona, on the East Coast, on April 27. 1855. She had resided most of her life in Wellington. Mr T. Cripps, of Masterton. is a brother. The funeral will take place at Tinui tomorrow.
Mahanga Kaiwhata. one of the chiefs of the Hinepare tribe, has died in Motco at the age of 70 years. Mr Kaiwhata had lived the greater part of his life in that district, where he was born. His father, Paora Kaiwhata. was associated with the Hawke’s Bay Volunteers in the battle of Omaranui, and with such men as Colonel Whitmore and Sir Donald McLean. Paora Kaiwhata also gave valuable assistance to the Government of the day during other battles in the district. Mahanga Kaiwhata was married to Ani Harata. a member of the Ngatikahungunu tribe/ Wairoa. He leaves two sons, Paul and Thomas Kaiwhata.
