EKETAHUNA
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council was held last night, there being present: Councillors W. Olsen (chairman), M. W. Priest, D. D. Ryan. E. M. Simmers, K. Marenzi and P. S. Page. Leave of absence was granted the Mayor, Mr W. Simpson. The treasurer (Mr B. Dinnan) reported as follows:—District Fund Account, dr. £275 12s 2d; Domain Account, cr. £5 3s 8d; rate arrears, £421 4s sd; cemetery arrears. £24 ss; library arrears, 15s. Accounts amounting.to £787 19s 7d were passed for payment. The Health Inspector reported for the period July 1 to September 30:— Notifiable infectious disease: I am pleased to be able to report a clear, bill of health, no cases having occurred during the above period. Foodshops and eating houses have been inspected at intervals, and a reasonable general standard is being maintained. It is desirable that a general clean up of the borough be brought about during the next four weeks. Owing to the fact that no regular rubbish service is available, the householders particularly would welcome this opportunity of disposing of the various accumulations. The following building permits were issued during the month:—W. N. Richardson, Bright Street, motor shed, 1 £6O; estate Thos. Pepper, Main Street, repairs and renovations, £6O. The librarian (Mr Dinnan) stated that for the quarter ended September 30, the number of books issued during the period was 997, and subscribers 64. The subscriptions and extra book fees or the period amounted to £lO Ils sd. Twelve new publications have been catalogued and placed on the shelves of the Lending Department.
The Plunket Society wrote asking the council to trim the hedges at the Rest Room. The request was agreed to. Mr C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., forwarded the text of the proposed Shop Legislation (opening and closing hours of shops). The chairman stated that the Bill was for the purpose of closing shops all day on Saturday. It was decided to object to the Bill.
The Municipal Association advised that the annual conference would be held in Auckland in March, 1941.
The Wairarapa A. and P. Society wrote asking if the council would declare a holiday on the People’s Day of the Carterton Show. The letter was received.
The Department of Internal Affairs wrote asking for a photograph of the Centennial Memorial. It was decided to accede to the request. The National Service Department wrote stating that an organiser of the Home Guard Movement would be in Eketahuna on Friday morning at 9.30, and asked the Council to appoint a delegate to be present at the proposed meeting. It was decided that Councillor P. S. Page act as the Council's representative. The Clerk was authorised to call applications for the position of ranger. 'A committee consisting of Councillors Olsen, Ryan and Marenzi was set up to, make arrangements for a farewell social to be tendered Mr and Mrs Simpson.
Personal. Mr W. ■ Taylor, Nireaha Road, is an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital.
