ESPERANTO

MASTERTON CLUB MEETING. SEASON • CONCLUDED. The Masterton Esperanto Club held its final meeting of the 1940 season last evening. Mr A. G. Wiltshire presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting took the form of an annual general meeting with a short conversational session. In his presidential address. Mr Wiltshire referred to the enjoyable evenings spent at the club meetings and of the progress made in the study of the international language. He said it was very pleasing to see the peace time strength of the club maintained during the year in which war time conditions obtained; and he hoped next year’s activities would be equally successful. The annual report and balance-sheet covering the 14th year’s operations of the club and presented by the secret-ary-treasurer, Mi' W. H. King, indicated that much useful work had been accomplished at the regular meetings, of which 28 had been held during 1940. The membership had remained the same numerically as in 1939 and 1938, and a number of visitors had been entertained during the year. All members now use Esperanto reasonably well, both orally and by writing. The programmes provided had been highly educational and practical and had brought forward some splendid original articles from club members. The financial position of the club was now very sound, mainly due to the payment by members of a weekly levy for the purpose of building up a reserve. The report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted. A special vote of thanks was accorded the “Times-Age" for the publication of club reports throughout the year. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted: —Preident, Mr W. J. Beresford; vice-presidents. Mrs J. McNab (re-elected), and Mr N. Lamont; secretary-treasurer and N.Z.E.A. delegate, Mr W. H. King (re-elected). It was decided to hold an afternoon garden party on December 15 to celebrate the anniversary of the birthday of the creator of Esperanto, the late Dr L. L. Zamenhof; that the rates of club subscriptions remain undisturbed; that the collection of the weekly levy from senior members be continued next year; and that the club go into its summer recess until mid-March, 1941.
