The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister in the Wai - Cabinet, returned to Wellington by train from Auckland yesterday. The Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, left Wellington last night for Whangarei. He expects to return, at the end of the week.

The Right Reverend C. A. Cherrington, Bishop of Waikato, arrived in Masterton today and will conduct the annual confirmation service in St. Matthew's Church tonight at 7.30 o’clock. Messrs H. S. Lawson, A. L. Horn, S. Holden, E. Clark, J. McCarthy, D. Marshall, lan L. Thomas, J. Barr (Wellington), J. S. Jenkinson (Palmerston North), N. Sorensen (Mangatainoka) were recent guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton. Mr Ernest W. Hunt has been appointed chairman of the executive of the Wellington Crippled Children Society (Incorporated) in the place of Mr T. B. Guscott, who has resigned but retains a seat on the executive.-Mi-lan T. Cook succeeds Mr Hunt as honorary treasurer of the society. The appointment of Mr H. F. Butland, registrar of the Court of Arbitration, to the position of secretary of the Canterbury Employers’ Association, was announced yesterday. Mr Butland takes The position left vacant by the appointment of Mr D. I. Macdonald as secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association.

The death has occurred of, Mr David A. Evans, who was prominent in all branches of sport in his younger days, and who was well known for the past 25 years as a member of the staff of the Hawke’s Bay County Council. He was 54 years of age. In 1910 Mr Evans toured Australia as a member of the All Black team, and later he toured Australia with, a League All Black team. He was only 18 years of age when he first represented Hawke's Bay at Rugby. The death occurred on Sunday after a fairly long illness of Mr Leslie Gerald Hill, secretary of the Dunedin Jockey Club for the past 131 years. He was educated at New Plymouth Boys’ High School. On his return from the war in 1918, he went to Whangarei, where he was appointed secretary of the local racing club, retaining that position till 1927, when he went to Dunedin. As a young man he was a prominent footballer, and in 1914 played full-back for the Taranaki team which captured the Ranfurly Shield from Auckland.

The death has occurred of Captain Hugh Monro, chairman of directors of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, at the age of 78, says a Press Association telegram from Christchurch. Captain Monro got his first command at the age of 22 in the brig Rio Loge, which was running cargoes from New Zealand to South Africa and Mauritius. In 1889, with the late Mr A. H. Turnbull, he began to accumulate a small fleet. Captain Monro commanded such well-known vessels as the Manurewa, Kinclure, Timaru, Rona and Durlow. With Mr Turnbull he formed the Canterbury' Steam Shipping Company in 1900. Captain Monro was chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board,from 1931 to 1935. Mr E. H. L. Bernau, solicitor, Wanganui. has been appointed secretary of the Wanganui Collegiate School Board of Trustees, and will succeed Mr J. P. Williamson, who will retire at the end of the year, after more than 30 years' service. Mr Bernau attended Wanganui Collegiate School from 1910 to 1914 He served in the Great War with the Canterbury Regiment, in Egypt and France, and attained the rank of captain, and also enlisted for service with the Second N.Z.E.F. in the present war. Mr Bernau was a New Zealand cricket representative in 1922-23. and toured England with the New Zealand team in 1927. He also represented Wanganui at cricket before and after the Great War, and played for Wellington in Plunket Shield matches.
