A Keen Duel. The Hema Te Ao Handicap at Otaki on Saturday provided a keen duel between Enrich and Trench Law, the former hanging on a bit the better at the end after a good deal of use had been made of Trench Law. Trench Law went up to the front half a mile from home, and the effort found him just weakening at the end. while Enrich had been nicely saved in behind for his run, and when he did come uphe was able to save ground by getting through on the rails. Noble Fox was a good third, after looking more dangerous in the straight. He had been in the rear throughout the early, running. Sleeveless was fourth. She led for a couple of furlongs, and was then restrained in behind. She put up a creditable performance. Guide to Bigger Events. The Masterton Racing Club’s meeting
as has been pointed out in these columns before, is a good guide to form at Wellington and New Zealand Cup meetings. Last year was no exception to the rule. The winner of the C. F. Vallance Memorial Handicap on the second day was Yours Truly, who ran second to Centrepoise in the Watkins Handicap at Trentham a week later and then went on to win the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton. The first day's winner of the mile Masterton Handicap was Mishna, who beat everything except Old Bill (later to win the Wellington Cup and W.R.C. Autumn Handicap) in the Wainui Handicap on the opening day at Trentham. Two years ago the winner of the Masterton Handicap was Arctic King, who also succeeded within a month in the New Zealand Cup. The preceding year Arctic King was narrowly beaten in the same Masterton race, but, after then going amiss for a time, he came back in the ■ autumn to win the C.J.C. Great. Autumn. Handicap. The Vallance Memorial victor that, year was Galteemore, a very useful horse subsequently in provincial cup company.
