ST. ANDREW SOCIETY
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. ARRANGEMENTS FOR NEXT GATHERING. At a meeting of the Council of the Saint Andrew Society, held last evening, affectionate reference was made to late ex-Councillor R. A. M. Miller. A resolution lamenting his death, and ex? pressing sympathy for the Chieftainess, Mrs R. A. Miller, and family, was carried in silence. A report on the gathering held on October 5 was received. Gratitude was expressed to Mrs Robert Bell for having made the haggis for that occasion. It was decided'that the next gathering (the final regular monthly gathering of the season) should take the form of a Halloween celebration. The rule confining gatherings to members and their invited guests will be suspended for that occasion. Some discussion took place on the question whether the gathering be held, as usual, on a Saturday, or on Thursday, October 31, that day being actually Halloween. It was decided to adhere to Saturday, November 2. as being better suited to the many juveniles who wish to attend. The "Little Britons" recently arrived from Scotland, with their guardians, are to be invited as guests of the society. Charges for admission are to be as usual. It is the intention to devote to juvenile activities appropriate to Halloween the part of the evening usually occupied by a concert programme, and then to carry on with dancing in the usual manner. Arrangements were also made for holding the annual Scottish Concert at the Opera House on Saint Andrew’s night, Saturday. November 30. An exceptional programme is being arranged by the musical director, Mr William C. Mann, including artists of high reputation from Wellington and elsewhere. The first public appearance of the society’s Ladies’ Choir is eagerly awaited. The Society’s Pipe Band will, of course be in attendance, and other items will include Highland dancing, and Scots country dancing of a type never before seen in Masterton. Fifty per cent of the net proceeds of the concert will be devoted to the Provincial Patriotic Fund.
It was reported that the sale of tickets for the raffle of the Highland doll made by Mrs Alan Graham is proceeding rapidly, and a substantial return for patriotic purposes should result.
