SHOW AFFAIRS
MEETING OF MASTERTON ASSOCIATION. TUG-OF-WAR COMPETITION. The president, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association held in the Farmers’ Rooms last night. Several apologies for absence w’ere received. Prior to the commencement of business the president referred in sympathetic terms to the loss sustained by Mr R. M. Perry in the death of his wife and child; Mrs W. S. Hodder in the death of her husband; Mr J. J. Hunter in the death of his father; Mrs Robert A. M. Miller in the death of her husband; Mr F. M. Reynolds in the loss of his brother, and Mr H. H. Cross in the death of his father. A motion of condolence was passed, those present standing in silence. The secretary of the Masterton branch of the Navy League wrote thanking the society for the use of its rooms at a nominal charge and expressed appreciation for the assistance given by Mr R. H. Williams and his staff.
The letter was received. The secretary of the Northern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society sent a circular in connection with the licensing of showmen. It was pointed out that the council had been appointed the licensing authority, and would shortly be issuing renewals. Mr L. H. Smart, secretary of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society, wrote advising that a team of 8 committeemen would be selected to compete in a tug-of-war competition with the Association, the event to take place after the parade on the second day. The following were selected, from which the president would pick his team: Messrs R. E. Gordon Lee (president), G. Harvey, Eric Shaw, W. G. Laing, P. D. McLachlan, A. G. Tinkham, G. Rushton, N. Elatchford, F. B. Pickering. G. F. Candy, D. McGregor. A working model of a modern wbolshed and yard, which had been displayed at the Exhibition was demonstrated to members and evoked considerable interest.
It was decided to write and thank (he Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan, for securing the model.
