C. reports the bombardment by heavy and light naval forces of a concentration of enemy shipping in Cherbourg Harbour, detected by reconnaissance planes. Excellent co-operation by the R.A.F. assisted the naval forces throughout the operations. An R.A.F. pilot has described the bombardment as like five hundred thunderstorms rolled into one. The Admiralty communique states that the British warships met with no opposition either during their approach to the port or during the bombardment. It was known that enemy naval forces were at Cherbourg. On the return journey, the British warships were fired on by shore batteries, but they suffered no damage or casualties.
