STRIKE AT MINE
CAUSE OF STOPPAGE. WORK RESUMED YESTERDAY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day, An explanation that the refusal of the members of the Dobson Miners’ Union to work on Monday was not based on a protest against the Public Safety Emergency Regulations, gazetted last week, was made last night by the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb. The miners, said the Minister, had held a stop-work meeting to protest against the company publishing notices calling upon certain men to sign some indemnity forms. The men had strongly resented the company’s action, and had decided on the stoppage of work as a protest. ’ “After that decision was arrived at, a motion was passed protesting against the drastic nature of the regulations,’’ Mr Webb added. “The stop-work meeting did not take place on account of the regulations.” Information received by the Minister was that the men resumed work yesterday. He had not been informed of the stoppage of work till Monday evening.
