TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
MEETING IN MASTERTON. ADDRESS ON MAORI RACE. The Masterton Townswomen’s Guild held its usual meeting yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs Bennett) presided over a fair attendance and welcomed members and visitors. It was decided to celebrate the Guild’s birthday in November, and that each member may invite a friend. Mrs Bennett thanked members who contributed parcels for the orphanages. Two delegates, Mesdames Dagg and Jarvis, were appointed to attend the public meeting to be held on October 14 to discuss Dental Clinic affairs. Mrs Graham rendered two enjoyable vocal items, “I Travel the Road,” and “My Task.” A play reading drama, “Olivia and the Duke,” was presented by Mesdames Hair, Day and Diggle. The competitions resulted as follows:—Kettle holder: Mrs Dagg, 1; Mrs Donovan, 2; Mrs Foster, 3. Nut loaf: Mrs Taylor, 1; Mrs Lyttle, 2; Mrs Donovan and Mrs Coe (equal), 3; Mrs Snowsill, very highly commended. Afternoon tea was served, then Mrs Bennett introduced the Rev. Taepa, who gave an interesting address on the Maori race. He related the events which lead up to the building of the Historical Maori Church at Otaki in 1849, and recited in the Maori and English language, the message from a Maori chieftain to his people:—“l no longer seek honour on earth, but I seek honour in Heaven. Build us a church." Mr Taepa ended his address with the verse from St,-Matthew: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven.” The meeting closed with the singing of the Ode and the National Anthem.
