FEATHERSTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the Kahutara Hall yesterday. There was a good attendance considering the weather conditions. Mrs McKenna presided. A vote of sympathy was passed to the president in her recent bereavement. The . meeting opened with the Institute’s Aspiration and a prayer for peace. The thought for the day was given by Miss Corlet. Miss Wolters, Carterton (Dominion Treasurer), gave an interesting report concerning the Dominion Council. Mrs Fenwick presented Miss Wolters with a posy. A sale stall resulted in satisfactory business being done. The proceeds are to buy wool which is to be knitted into garments for the Mission to Seamen. The competitions resulted as follows: —Shortbread: Mrs Pope, 1; Miss Money, 2. (The shortbread will be sent to soldiers overseas). Article made from flour-bag: Mrs Duffy, 1; Miss Dimes, 2. Best bloom: Mrs Welsh, 1; Mrs Pottinger, 2. Telegram competition: Mrs Sinclair Junr. The hostesses were Mesdames D. Wilson, R. Welsh, F. Hood Senr., and Miss Corlet. HAUNUI CROQUET CLUB SEASON OPENED. The weather conditions yesterday did not prevent the Haunui Croquet Club from opening the season. Members and friends gathered in the pavilion, and the president. Miss Eva Card, extended a welcome to all present. She asked Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford (patroness of the club) to declare the greens open. Mrs Riddiford spoke of the pleasure it gave her to again open the greens for another season. Mrs Riddiford briefly touched on conditions in England and then declared the greens open for the season. Miss Nix presented Mrs Riddiford with a posy. , Afternoon tea was served, the tables being artistically decorated by Miss Viles. Two competitions were won by Mrs Baker and Mrs Lowell. SCHOOL ASSOCIATION EUCHRE PARTY. There was a fair attendance at the Home and School Association’s euchre party held on Monday night. Mrs Leslie and Mr Rae were the winners. The aggregate prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Mellish, 1; Mrs Charles, 2. Men: Mr Rae, 1; Mr R. Holland, 2. Personal. Mesdames Mclntyre, Poulton and Smith, who have been the guests of Mrs L. McKenna, Pahautea, have re_ turned to Wellington. First Aid. An examination in First Aid is to be held on Thursday night. The lectures on Home Nursing are to begin next week.
