DOUBTS & FEARS

ADMISSION BY NAZI PAPER THAT AXIS MAY BE BEATEN. HATE CAMPAIGN AGAINST MR CHURCHILL. (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) BASLE, October 8. For the first time since the outbreak of war, a German newspaper mentions the possibility that the Axis may be unable to win. The “Allgemeine Zeitung” says that even in the hypothetical case of the Axis being unable to end the war successfully, Britain would on no account be able to annihilate Germany and Italy. The German campaign against Mr Churchill reached a climax today, with all newspapers carrying headlines to the effect that Britain has one possibility of saving herself, namely by ousting Mr Churchill. The “Basler Nachrichten’s” Berlin correspondent interprets the campaign as part of the Brenner decision to end the war at any price.
