TOWN FLOWER

BIG PLANTING SCHEME PROPOSED AVENUE IN THE PARK. IMPORTANT BEAUTIFYING PROJECT. Masterton has decided to adopt the flowering apple as the town flower and steps are to be taken at once to implement the scheme. Following consideration of the proposal for the past month or so, a committee representing the Masterton Horticultural Society. Beautifying Society and Borough Council met last night, under the chairmanship of Mr H. L. Esau, and agreed on the adoption of the flowering apple as the town flower. Various proposals were put forward to carry out the scheme, and it was estimated that at least a thousand trees would be ordered immediately for planting next April and May. The Horticultural Society has agreed to donate trees to be planted in an avenue in Masterton Park, the suggested site being between Queen Street and the Allan Memorial Bridge, the trees to be arranged three deep, early, medium and late flowering trees respectively in each line. The Beautifying Society has agreed to supply 20 dozen trees to be planted at various places throughout the town. An inspection is to be made next week to determine sites where trees could be planted. Among suggested sites are the town entrances between the bridges in Queen Street, Macara Street, Kuripuni Triangle, lower end of Cole Street, State houses, Te Ore Ore Road, and an avenue on the approach to Masterton hospital, regarding which permission is to be sought from the Wairarapa Hospital Board. The trees are to be allocated so as to give the best effect. Another proposal, sponsored by the Beautifying Society, is a scheme to supply the trees to residents requiring them at the cost of the tree, and to plant them free of charge. “In the years to come,” observed Mr Esau this morning, “the trees will make a display well worthy of the town and other towns will be eager to adopt the scheme.” He added that the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, viewed the scheme very favourably and had promised to do all he could to assist it.
