RABBIT CONTROL
DESTRUCTION OF NATURAL ENEMIES. FARMERS EXPRESS CONCERN. At a meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, held in Masterton yesterday afternoon, Mr James Andrew brought up the matter of keeping rabbits under control on the back country. “It is a serious state of affairs,” stated Mr Andrew. He pointed out that the Acclimatisation Society had imposed a bounty on stoats and weasels, the natural enemy of the rabbit. “There seems to be an apathy or a lack of understanding on the part of the society,” he said. Endorsing Mr Andrew’s remarks, Mr R. W. Kebbell stated that there was no doubt that the ferrets were being killed off. “In view of the shortage of labour, the position should be remedied. I also understand that the local rabbit inspector has been taken away, and, despite assurances, has never been replaced,” added Mr Andrew. “It is only four years ago that I had 10,000 rabbits cleared off my property,” observed Mr Hugh Morrison. Messrs Andrew, Speedy and Kebbell were appointed a committee to communicate with the society in the matter.
