COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL BUSINESS BEFORE FINANCE COMMITTEE. FIVE PER CENT WAGE INCREASE A meeting of the finance committee of the Masterton County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Masterton, this afternoon. The chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley, presided. There were also present Councillors R. E. Gordon Lee, J. W. Colquhoun, W. I. Armstrong, J. Donald, G. Moore, P. R. Welch, and the County Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley. The treasurer reported on the accounts at the Bank of New Zealand at September 30 as follow: County fund account, credit £3648; bridge fund loan account, credit, £844; bridge loan account (1938) credit £6710, £5OOO of which was on fixed deposit; workers dwelling loan account, credit £B6; imprest, credit £550. Receipts since last meeting totalled £10,033, of;which £1875 represented 75 per cent of the rate subsidy for the current financial year and £4671 16s 5d represented subsidies paid by the Main Highways Board on road maintenance and construction works. The total subsidies outstanding and due by the Main Highways 'Board and the Public Works Department at September 30 were £414. Accounts for £9.843 17s lid were recommended for payment. The secretary of the New Zealand County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employers advised that the application on behalf of county councils for exemption from the 5 per cent cost of living bonus had been dismissed by the Court of Arbitration and that councils which had withheld the bonus pending advice from the union were now required to make necessary readjustment as from August 12, 1940. It was decided to place £3OOO of the Masterton County Council bridge loan (1938) on fixed deposit for various periods up to 12 months.
