ALFREDTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Ode to Friendship and the New Zealand Anthem opened the October meeting of the Women’s Institute at which Mrs Stan Edmonds presided over a fair attendance of members. The secretary, Miss S. Napier, reported that during the month a parcel had been forwarded to the lepers at Makogai, containing needlework and cottons. Three parcels were dispatched to local soldiers who were serving overseas. These contained a Christmas cake and comforts. In the competition for a cotton house frock, to be worn, there .were many entries. The results were: Mrs G. Napier 1, Mrs E. Seymoui- 2, Mesdames E. McLean and V. Payne 3. The other competitions resulted as follows: Best bloom, Mrs Algie (verbena) 1, Mrs Weston (calendula) 2, Mrs E. Seymour (pansy) 3. Date scones: Mrs E. McLean 1, Mrs V. Payne 2, Mrs Stan Edmonds 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Alex Edmonds, V. Payne and Miss Joan Clarkson. PATRIOTIC SOCIETY CARD PARTY. The card party organised by the Patriotic Society was, as usual, well supported, the winners of the cards being: Ladies, Mesdames V. Payne and J. Hartley; men, Messrs R. Low and O. Walker. Winners of the aggregate: Ladies, Mrs R. Harcombe (trophy donated by Mrs R. Kebbell); consolation, Mrs O. Walker (trophy donated by Mrs R. Low). Men: Mr R. Low (trophy given by Mr R. Kebbell); consolation, Rex Rolls (trophy given by Mr E. Seymour). The competition results were: Dressed doll (given by Mrs J. McKay) won by Mr R. Kebbell. who gave the doll for re-sale when it was bought by Mrs R. Kebbell; goose (given by Mr Jock Olsen), won by Mr K. E. Percy; trophy (given by Mr F. Johnson) won by Mr Frank Nordlof. A box of rhododendrons brought in by Mr G. Godinagh were sold to Mr B. Pilcher, who gave the flowers foi-re-sale, when they were bought by Mrs R. Kebbell. A box of anemones and polyanthus brought in by Mr R. Kebbell were bought by Messrs Stan Smith and lan MacDonald. A donation of £2O from Messrs Foster Percy and Harry Percy, to be given equally to the London Distress Fund and Bomber Fund, was acknowledged with thanks. The takings for the evening amounted to £lO. It was decided to send ten copies of a weekly paper each week for 12 months to soldiers’ camps with the compliments of the Alfredton Patriotic Committee. The hostesses were Mesdames V. Payne and O. Walker. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs J. Rossiter and Son, Mount Eden, Mr and Mrs Brooking, Dannevirke, and Mr F. Rossiter, Nireaha. have been guests of Mr and Mrs O. Walker during the week. Mrs J. Scott, Burnham, is visiting Mrs E. Didsbury, Pah Fiat. Mrs J. Kelly, Masterton, spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs E. Hutchings. Mrs R. Hall is staying with her daughter. Mrs L. McKenna, Pihautea. Mr H. Rolls, who is in the Pahiatua Hospital, is reported to be progressing favourably.
