EKETAHUNA
BOROUGH BALL AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. ("Times-Age” Special.) What proved to be the most popular social gathering of the season was the ball organised by the Eketahuna Borough Ladies’ Committee, and held in the Public Hall last evening. From the moment the orchestra struck up till the early hours of the morning when “Auld Lang Syne” was sung there was not a dull moment. Despite the wet night, the hall was filled, many visitors being present from Masterton, Pahiatua and Woodville while the surrounding districts were fully represented. Ken Hicks's Orchestra played a programme of old-time and modern favourites. Much appreciated extras were contributed by Mrs G. A. Hansen and Mr P. Holford. Messrs V. Wimsett and R. Mountjoy were efficient M’sC. The hostesses for the evening were Mrs F. C. Turner, and Miss M. Anderson. Mrs Simmers was to have assisted in this capacity, but was unavoidably absent through illness. During the evening a buffet savoury supper was served, the tables making a most attractive picture with beautiful cherry blossom, pink clematis and for-get-me-nots. The ladies responsible for the successful gathering are to be congratulated in connection with their efforts. Mrs V. Wimsett made an excellent secretary. The ball will result in a handsome sum being provided for a most worthy cause —comforts for local soldiers. Earthquake Shocks. Two earthquake shocks were experienced in Eketahuna shortly before 1.30 p.m. yesterday. The first consisted of a faint tremor and was followed about a minute later by a more pronounced shock.
