ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB ALLISON CUP RACE. SPLENDID WIN FOR WOOLLETT. Riding conditions were excellent on Saturday when the Wairarapa Ama-; teur Cycling Club held its final race of the 1940 road season for the Allison Challenge Trophy. The race was ovet a course to the Blairlogie Hotel anc return, starting and finishing in Queen Street North. The course was a particularly trying one. being through hilly country with about 13 miles of rough metal road to be negotiated. The first race for this trophy was held in 1938 when it was won by R. Copp riding from scratch in the time of 1 hour 5i min lOsec. Last year the race was cancelled. Neville Norris was the first ridei away at 2.20 p.m., riding from a handicap of 3 minutes. J. Heaven followec 30sec later, G. Simpson 45sec later Norman Norris lmin 45sec later and K Woollett 3min later. Simpson caugh. Heaven after a few miles, these twi riders getting level with Neville Norri. just before reaching the Taueru Hotel Norman Norris came up with the three leaders at a point about 11 miles from the start, the scratch rider K. Woollet being about 2 minutes behind. On thi steep incline just before, the turning point the leading bunch broke up. Nev ille Norris dropping back. At the tun. Norris, Heaven and Simpson were, leading Woollett by about 1 minute. I. was not until the Taueru was reachec on the run home that the scratch man succeeded in catching the leaders. Jus at this point G. Simpson had the mis - fortune to sustain a puncture necessit ating his retirement. Norris. Hcavci and Woollett completed the course together. K. Woollett winning from J Heaven by a length with Norman Norris half a wheel away third. Neville Norris filling fourth position. The time foil the race proved to be 6:{min fastei than the race two years ago. The placings were as follow: — K. Woollett (scr), time Ihr 46min, 5 2-ssec, 1; J. Heaven, 2.30), time Ihr 48min 36 l-sscc. 2; Norman Norris (1.45), time Ihr 47min 51 2-ssec, 3. The following is the final position of riders with regard to the two seasonal points trophies.
