MASTERTON PARK CLUB ANNUAL REPORT. PAST SEASON’S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. The following is the annual report of the Masterton Park Lawn Tennis Club for the past season, which is signed by the president. Mr L. S. Nicol and the secretary, Mj- S. Charleson:— "Your committee has much pleasure in presenting the annual report for the 1939-40 season. Our membership, though showing a slight decrease over the previous season, is still strong and prospects in. this respect for the coming year appear quite bright. In connection with our finances the balance to be brought forward after the season’s operations shows a slight decrease on last year’s figures. The club is in a good financial position. For the third year in succession our B grade representatives have succeeded in winning the Wairarapa championship and are to be congratulated most heartily on their meritorous performance. The C grade team, while not achieving the honours attained by the B played many interesting and enjoyable matches. We also congratulate one of our lady members on gaining Wairarapa representative honours. Exceptionally keen interest was displayed in our club competitions this year and we congratulate the winners on their success. The events were won as follows:—Men’s senior championship singles, Mr N. O’Kane; men’s senior handicap singles, Mr N. O’Kane; men's senior handicap doubles, Messrs N. O'Kane and L. Morgan; combined handicap doubles, Miss J. Bannister and Mr N. O’Kane; ladies' championship singles, Miss M. Pownall: ladies’ handicap singles, Miss M. Pownall; ladies' handicap doubles, Misses I. Reader and M. West. These trophies were presented on closing day by Mrs Nicol, when we were entertained to a delightful afternoon tea. “During the season several of cur members have left for service overseas and we wish them ‘all the best’ and t: safe return. In the- winter months the courts were topdressed and everything points to their being in excellent order for the coming season. We regret to record the death of LeadingAircraftsinan T. E. Denbee, who was a very highly esteemed member. “In conclusion we would express our thanks to the Park staff, the Press, and all office bearers who have worked so conscientously to assist the club and to encourage and maintain that feeling of sportsmanship which has for so long been a prominent feature.” ST. MATTHEW’S CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING ON SATURDAY. YANKEE TOURNAMENT HELD. There was an attendance of fifty at the official opening of the St. Matthew’s Tennis Club held in Masterton on Saturday afternoon. Many visitors were present from kindred clubs. In declaring the season officially open the president, the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich, referred to the past season as being one of the most successful in the history of the club and expressed the wish that the coming season would be as enjoyable. He extended a welcome to new members ,and visitors. Mrs Rich was then called upon to hit the first ball over the net. A Yankee tournament was played during the afternoon, and provided keen competition. Miss G. Clarke and Mr J. Bright emerged the winners in an interesting final.
