CARTERTON

DANCE AT PARKVALE HALL FUNDS BENEFIT. (“Times-Age" Special.) As a result of the larger attendance at the dance at the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening the hall funds will benefit very considerably. Those present enjoyed a pleasant time to music supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton (Carterton) and Mr Geo Harding (Masterton). Mr Dan Jensen was a very efficient M.C. The Monte Carlo waltz was won byMr R. Warrington and Miss Jacobson and the Lucky Spot waltz by Mr Hooper and Miss Salisbury. Supper was provided. For those who did not dance cards were provided, the prizes going to Miss D. Jensen and Mr W. Anderson. METHODIST CHURCH SIXTY-NINTH ANNIVERSARY. The 69th anniversary' of the Carterton Methodist Church was celebrated yesterday, there being very good congregations both in the morning and evening. Special music by the choir was a feature of the services. The preacher in the morning was the . Rev. J. A. Daglish, who took as his subject “The Church in the World Today.” He paid a tribute to the pioneers who first founded the Methodist Church in the Wairarapa and later in Carterton. Their hearts had been fired by enthusiasm by their great leader. John Wesley, who after his own heart had changed, was compelled to go out in highways and byways to preach the word of God. The evening service was taken by the Rev. H. S. Kings, of Mastertifn, who delivered an impressive address on “What of the Church." A special feature of the service was the singing of the anthem “Sweet is the Sunlight,” Mrs M. W. Worsfold taking the solo part. There was a full choir. Three boys from the Masterton choir were present and rendered acceptably a trio. The collection in the evening was in aid of the Church Trust Fund and it should benefit materially as a result. On Tuesday the anniversary tea will take place. OBITUARY MR WM. STOODLEY. After an illness extending over a long period there passed away at the Masterton Hospital last evening, Mr Wm. Stoodley, at the age of 71 years. The deceased was a well known figure in Carterton and was highly respected. He.was born at Parkvale on January 14, 4869. Deceased was a member of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, having the Order on February 21, 1891. HcZis survived by four sisters and a bi other (Mesdames J. Daysh, R. Bridgewater, C. Goodin, Miss Stoodley and Mr Geo. Stoodley, of Palmerston North). The.funeral will leave King’s Mortuary Chapel, Broadway, Carterton, on Tuesday, October 8, at 1.15 p.m. for the Clareville Cemetery. Rainfall for September. Mr J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports that in September- there were 14 wet days, with a total of 4.07 inches of rain. The total fall for the year is 34.4, and is well over the average. GOLF LADIES’ COMPETITION. The schoolhouse at Belvedere was packed on Friday evening when a dance was held for the soldiers fund the result being a financial success. Excellent music was provided by Mrs Rogers (piano) and Mr R. Knowles (violin) and Mrs A. E. Reid was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr ‘ and Mrs W. E. Knowles. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district. The gathering was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne." District High School. The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee will be held at the school, Holloway Street, tonight. N.Z. Democratic Labour Party. A meeting in connection with the Democratic Labour Party will be held in the Bandroom tonight at 8 o'clock. Personals. Constable Hill, of Masterton., is relieving Constable Robertson who left Carterton this morning for Auckland on holiday. Rev. J. A. Daglish, of the Methodist Church. Carterton, exchanged pulpits with the Rev. H. S. Kings, Masterton. yesterday, and took the service at Masterton in the evening. Chinese Anniversary. As the 29th anniversary of the Republic of China will be observed on Thursday next, all Chinese premises will be closed to business on that date.
