RANDWICK MEETING HIGH CASTE WINS EPSOM. STAKES TO BEAU VITE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copy right i SYDNEY, October 6. New Zealand horses were right in the picture at the opening day of the Randwick spring meeting held in ideal spring weather on Saturday. An unprecedented incident happened in the Epsom Handicap, when Beaulivre. who was one of the most fancied candidates for years, was sudden-’ ly pulled up when in a winning position a furlong from home. His jockey, Munro, explained that he thought Beaulivre had broken down irretrievably. He dismounted at the post. However, Beaulivre walked satisfactorily to the enclosure, and looked quite well. He was later examined by a veterinary surgeon, who reported that “Beaulivre, when cooled off. disclosed no injury or abnormality." A huge circle of Beaulivre’s admirers was chagrined by the untoward happening. With Beaulivre out of the way. High Caste ran on to a well-deserved Epsom victory. High Caste stripped thoroughly fit for the Epsom, and left the course quite sound. The A.J. C. Derby, won by Pendect. saw Nightbeam unruly at the post, finally twisting the plate on his near foreleg. He had to be taken back to the saddling paddock, where the plate was adjusted, causing a delay of eighteen minutes in the start of the Derby, in which he ran a great race, but faded out in the straight. The time for the Derby was extremely slow. Beau Vite had an easy victory in the Colin Stephen Stakes, in which he led over the last mile. The course was in splendid order, if a trifle soft. The attendance was about 65,000. Results: — First Hurdle Race: Masterpiece. 10.9 (Young). 1; Valhalla, 11.3 (Hynes), 2; Titrol, 9.4 (Windle), 3. Nine started. Two lengths and a half; ten. Tidal Wave was fourth. Nightbeam, who ran prominently throughout, was fifth. Then came Scientist. Time, 2.37. Epsom Handicap: High Caste, 9.5 (Bartie), 1; Mildura, 9.4 (McMenamin), 2; St. Constant, 8.10 (Coutts), 3. All started. Beaulivre looked all over a winner approaching the home turn, where he was challenged by High Caste, who, closely attended by Mildura, overtook Beaulivre and, in the tace to the post, High Caste just won by 4 a neck amid great excitement. The excellent time was 1.354. St. Constant, who was running last throughout, staged a brilliant finish to run third, one length and a half behind Mildura. GREAT EFFORT BY BEAU VITE RANDVZICK RECORD BROKEN. (Received This Day, 9.10 a.m.) SYDNEY. This Day. Beau Vite's time in the Colin Stephen Stakes on Saturday clipped half a second off the Randwick record for the distance. Beaulivre will run in the Metropolitan Handicap today and will be ridden by the New Zealand jockey, A. E. Ellis. The stipendiary stewards are of the opinion that Beaulivre struck himself during the running of the Epsom Handicap and that that accounted for his temporary lameness. Trainer Price on Saturday night said that there was apparently nothing wrong with Beaulivre who ate well yesterday. Beau Vite in his engagement in the Metropolitan Handicap will be ridden by McMenamin. FLEMINGTON MEETING MELBOURNE STAKES TO AJAX. TRANQUIL STAR SUCCESSFUL.
