AID FOR BRITAIN

MR WENDELL WILLKIE’S POLICY. QUESTION OF PACIFIC BASES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, October 3. According to the Cleveland correspondent of the "New York Times,” the Republican presidential candidate, Mr Willkie, slated that he gave no interview to the "Christian Science Monitor.” He declined to supplement in any way his public pronouncements regarding the acquisition of bases in the Pacific, which he favours. He said that he stood by his speech at San Francisco on September 22. Mr Willkie added that if he was elected he would continue the efforts to aid the heroic British, the only people in the world today who were fighting for their lives and liberty. “I would aid Britain,” he said, “even if it meant sacrificing some speed in the building of our own air fleet. The longer Britain holds out the more time we shall have to prepare.” In the course of his speech at San Francisco Mr Willkie said: "First W ( e must keep sending aid to Britain, our first line of defence and only remaining friend. Second, in the Pacific our best ends will be served by a strong, free, and democratically progressive China. We should render economic assistance to that end. Third, we must have an impregnable defence system; fourth, revise industry; fifth, use credits and economic agreements wisely, and sixth, explore, acquire, and develop Pacific air bases.”
