MAGISTRATE’S COURT BUSINESS AT YESTERDAY’S SITTING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court held yesterday when the following cases were dealt with: — Civil Cases. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following civil claims: — Carterton Furnishing Co. v. A. Aitcheson, claim £6 12s 2d, court costs 15s, solicitors’ fee 15s 6d; Carterton District Co-operative Society Ltd. v. W. J. Woodley, £2 7s 6d, court costs Ils. solicitors’ fee ss; Gordon Hughan Ltd. . v. Ana Turei, claim £2 18s 9d, costs £1 10s 6d; Hill and Hughes v. R. N. Campbell, claim £0 Is. costs 10s. In judgment summons cases, the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand proceeded against R. N. Campbell for the recovery of £l6 10s lOd. Defendant was ordered to pay the amount forthwith, with costs £1 Is, in default 14 days in Wellington gaol. In the case of Hill and Hughes v. ’R. N. Campbell, claim £36 19s sd. there was no appearance of defendant and the Magistrate ordered the amount to be paid forthwith, in default 5 weeks in Wellington gaol; costs £1 Ils 6d. Social Security Charge. C. Webster was proceeded against by J. L. Woods, Registrar of Social Security Department, that he did make default for more than one month after due date in payment of instalment of registration levy payable on May 1. 1940. Defendant was convicted and fined £1 with costs 10s. For a similar offence, that he failed to pay the levy as at February 1, 1940, he was also fined £1 and costs 10s. GOLF DRAW FOR SATURDAY. The following is the draw’for a medal and eclectic competition to be held on the Taratahi links on Saturday by members of the Carterton Golf Club (members are advised that placing with a club will be permitted until the end of the season): — From No. 1 tee: Taylor and Brown; Hill and Roydhouse; Beaven and Gustofson; Riggs and Callender; Tankersley and Harry. From No. 3 tee: Clarke and Harrington; Dwane and Hart; La.wrence and Booth; Colson and Wells; Kiddie and Whitburn. From No. 17 tee: Dudson and Smart; Steel and Hughes; Goodin and Barr; Fisher and Moroney; Jackson a bye.
EXAMINATION PASSES \ ' / TRINITY COLLEGE RESULTS. Dr. C. E. Ford, examiner for Trinity College, London, visited the Brigidine Convent, Carterton, on September 30. The following is a list of successful candidates: — Intermediate piano: Heather McKinnon, 76 merit. Junior piano: Mavis Wilson, 72 pass. Preparatory piano: Dorothy Martin, 85 honours; lan Upritchard, 76 merit; Evelyn Magee, 75 merit. First steps elocution: Ronald Williams, 82 merit; Lancette Baddiley, 81 merit; Mary O’Reilly. 81 merit; Iryre Freer, 76 merit; John Wilson. 75 merit; Marie McKenna, 72 pass; Avis Connolly, 71 pass; Sheila Keegan, 66 merit; Edward Marinich, 65 pass. Initial piano: Teresa Boyle, 65 pass. The following is a list of successful candidates for theory of music held in June: — Advanced intermediate: Heather - McKinnon, 76 merit. Advanced junior: Helen Barr, 95 honours. Preparatory: Roy Knutson. 95 honours; Evelyn Magee, 85 honours. The following is a list of shorthand results: —100 ,words per minute, Edith Newbolt; 90 words per minute, Ruth Vaughan; 70 words per minute, Alice Johnson; 60 words per minute, Ruth Hindley. Airman Honoured. Yesterday afternoon the Mayor and many residents assembled at the Borough Office. Carterton, to meet Ser-geant-Observer D. J. McPherson, son of Mr and Mrs W. McPherson, of Victoria Street, Carterton. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, spoke of the great work that was being achieved by the Royal Air Force, to which the guest of honour would be attached. The people of Carterton were proud of the young manhood who had and were offering their services to uphold the great traditions of the British Empire and to maintain and enjoy the freedom that had always been their objective. On behalf of the borough of Carterton, Mr Taverner asked Sergeant McPherson to accept a leather travelling bag, and expressed the wish he would enjoy good health, good luck and return again to Carterton covered with glory. (Applause). Mr Taverner, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, presented Sergeant McPherson with a parcel of woollen comforts. Mr McPherson thanked everyone for their good wishes and the presents he had received. Personal. Several members of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows, Manchester Unity, gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs McPherson to meet Bro. D. J. McPherson, who is a member of the R.A.F. During Ihe evening P.D.G.M. Bro. C. J. DeLacey, presented Bro McPherson with a gold mounted fountain pen and wished him on behalf of his fellow members and the lodge generally, good luck and a safe return to Carterton. Bro. McPherson thanked the lodge for the splendid giftCard Tourney. The weekly card evening run under the jurisdiction of the management of
the Carterton Troop of the Boy Scouts was well attended last evening, the prizes being won by Messrs C. J. Fisher and A. J. F. Whitehead and Mrs Whitehead in the men’s division, and by Mesdames M. Ticehurst and Pawhai in the ladies’ section. Prayer Meeting. St. Mark's Anglican Church was well filled last evening when the weekly prayer service was held. Captain Ojala of the Salvation Army delivered an address on prayer and was listened to with interest. Intercessory prayers were given and hymns suitable to the occasion were sung.
