BUTTER PRODUCTION

RECORD IN AUSTRALIA. According to the Commonwealth Statistician butter production in Australia in 1939-40 established a new record of 4,253,600 cwt. Factory output was 4,705,039 cwt., which was 170,000 cwt more than in the previous year, and 84,000 cwt. more than the previous peak year of 1934-35. It is stated that, despite this large production, the season was not uniformly favourable throughout Australia. The only States with better production figures than last year were Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. The Statistician said there had been a remarkable development in the production of cheese in Australia during the last four years. It had increased by 83 per cent to 630,000 cwt., in 193940. Bacon and ham production had remained fairly stable at just over 70,000,0001 b a year, but pork production had increased greatly. In 10 years, since the depression, it had increased by more than 100 per cent over 80,000,0001 b. ___
