ST. MATTHEW’S CLUB ’ END OF SEASON FUNCTION. INTER-CLUB COMPETITION CUP PRESENTED. There was a large attendance at the gathering held by the St Matthew’s Badminton Club in the Parish Hall last night. The season’s activities were brought to a close by a Yankee tournament which provided many interesting and keenly contested games. The final was won by Miss G. Baird and Mr R. Peters, who beat Miss M. Morton and Mr N. W. Ninnes, 15/8. The Ven Archdeacon E. J. Rich, president of the club, presided over a sitdown supper which had been artistically set out by an energetic ladies’ committee. At a suitable opportunity Mr Ninnes, secretary, called on Mr B. M, Hurley, vice-president of the Wairarapa Badminton Association, to present the Association's Challenge Cup to the club. An apology for absence was received from Mr E. K. Eastwood, president of the Association. “I wish to congratulate the St Matthew’s Club on winning the inter-club competition,” stated Mr Hurley. “Owing to the conditions arising through men being called away for military service it was decided to run the competition in one grade. The Association had agreed that for the duration of the war the A grade cup should be awarded to the winner of the competition. The club fielded a consistently strong team and thoroughly earned its win.” "I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the Association for carrying on with the club competition,” said Mr W. L. Harrington, club captain, in accepting the cup on behalf of the team. He stressed the fact that the competition had been particularly successful and had provided an enjoyable means of ' contact by St Matthew’s Club with other clubs in the district. “It can be said that the season has been the most successful yet experienced by the club,” observed Mr Ninnes.
Archdeacon Rich congratulated the club on its success, pointing out that it was not the winning of the cup which mattered but the spirit in which it had been contested. Dealing with the club as a church organisation and as a social centre in the community, Archdeacon Rich stated that although the present time was not one for hilarity it was the time for the goodfellowship and health benefits derived from sport. “It is pleasing to know that the club has had such a happy season.”
A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the ladies’ committee for the excellent supper arrangements and the president for his interest in the affairs of the club.
