LEAGUE OF NATIONS
LOCAL COUNCIL. NEW SECRETARY APPOINTED. A meeting of the Council of the League of Nations Union was held recently in the W.D.F.U. Rooms. It was stated in connection with the adoption scheme that negotiations were still proceeding and that one of the main factors in this connection was that of shipping. A discussion took place on the question of the continuance of assistance to Chinese war orphans. It was felt by some that owing to the intensifying of the Japanese blockade against China and the consequent uncertainty of the situation, that the question of the sending of further money should be deferred pending inquiries. Miss Barrer read an interim report which showed that the membership of the branch had been well maintained. Several debates had been held, literature distributed, and two jumble sales conducted for the purpose of raising funds. There had been addresses delivered by the Rev Usher and Mr Leigh Hunt, the outcome of the last of which had been the forming of a committee for the purpose of initiating a scheme for the adoption of children from Great Britain. This was now well under way.' Clothes had been donated for Red Cross and other purposes. Two delegates, Mesdames Cameron and Engstrom, and one observer, Mrs Barrer, had attended the League Summer School at the Hutt. Two delegates, Miss Barrer and Miss Tankersley, had been appointed to the Red Cross Committee and one, Miss O. lorns, to the Patriotic Committee. Funds sufficient, it was stated, to cover the cost of some six or seven soldiers parcels had been donated by members, and others had helped in the making : of hussifs and pocket pouches for the • soldiers.
Miss Barrer announced her resignation from the secretaryship of the branch owing to her impending departure from Masterton and this was accepted with great regret. Mrs Dodds, was appointed as secretary. It had become necessary to fill the place now left vacant on the Red Cross Committee, owing to Miss Barrer’s resignation, and Mrs N. Miller was appointed. Mr Denis Fairbrother, who is departing shortly for camp, was asked to accept honorary membership of the branch for the duration of his service, and the president wished him a safe return.
Mrs Barrel- said that she wished regretfully to remind. members of the passing of one who had been a member of the branch almost since its inception, in the person of Miss Munroe. The meeting stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to her memory.
In regard to future activities it was decided that Mr F. Renner, Principal of Rongotai College, should be invited to visit Masterton to give a lecture on or about October 19.
