FAREWELLS TO RECRUITS (To the Editor) Sir, —Perhaps one lot of boys did ride to camp in rather hectic style, but that cannot justify the severe regimentations to be enforced this week. Near relatives have sentimental rights that deserve a little consideration on the day a recruit actually quits his home environment. Anzac courage flourishes in a midVictorian public opinion out here. One flash of reckless youth can invoke a lasting restriction against those who defend democracy. We are the only Anglo-Saxon people unable to assemble and display gay pride in our defenders. Seeing our final parades turn into funerals sets relatives yearning for time-honoured styles of parting at the local station. Authority should be reminded of that, —I am, etc., —R. J. C.
