Messrs Boult, Stevens and Ronald (Wellington) were guests at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, yesterday. The death occurred at Ngaio on Saturday of Captain Henry Guy Crawford O’Neill, formerly a well-known shipmaster. in his 78th year. He had been seriously ill for some time. .. Major G. G. Hancox. E.D., Principal of Wairarapa College, has been granted leave of absence for six months for military duties by the Board of Governors. Major Hancox will proceed to camp on October 15 to assist with the training of a territorial Battalion.
Mi - M. H. Oram, chairman of the High Schools Board of Governors, Palmerston North, has consented to act as judge of the inter-collegiate oratory contest to be held in the Wairarapa College Assembly Hall on Saturday night next. Teams from Solway College, St. Matthew’s collegiate School, and Wairarapa College will compete. Mr R. J. Thomas, formerly of Masterton, where he was a pupil at the Wairarapa High School, but who for some years has been on. the staff of the New Zealand House in London, joined up with the New Zealand military forces at Aidershot in August. Mr Thomas is a son of Mrs W. E. Chunn, of Masterton.
The following were recent guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton:—Messrs D. C. Kerr (Rotorua), J. Henney, B. Grindle, G. D. Bennie (Napier), L. H. Martin (Hastings), M. Feeney, G., Taylor (Palmerston North), Hartslorne, H. D. Curline, D. D. Duncan, S. V. Gooding, P. Corrigan (Wellington). The Rev William Marshall, who was in charge of the Presbyterian Home Mission Station at Hanmer, died at Hanmer recenty. Mr Marshall, who was 70 years, was for 19 years minister of the Tinwald, Flemington, and Lagmhor Presbyterian Churches., He represented the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand at the General Assembly at Edinburgh in 1935. Mr A. C. Blake tendered his resignation from the Board of Governors of Wellington Technical College at the meeting of the beard last night. Mr Blake pointed out that, though his term of office on the Technical College Board had not expired, he was no longer a member of the Wellington Education Board, which he had represented. The resignation was accepted with regret.
A pleasant function took place yesterday afternoon when members of the staff of the Masterton Printing Company assembled to farewell Mr D. O - Connor, who will enter camp with the Fourth Reinforcements. The presentation of a wallet from the management and staff was made by Mr J. J. Hunter who wished Mr O'Connor a speedy and a safe return. Mr O Connor suitably acknowledged the gift.
