HARRIERS
KIATERE CLUB SEASON OFFICIALLY CLOSED. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. On Saturday under ideal condition the Kiatere Harrier Club officially closed the season. There was an excellent attendance of runners and club supporters and also members and supporters of the Masterton Harrier Club. The juniors held a race over 21 miles, G. Laing was first away followed later by A. Pickett, with S. Pickett, 15sec behind; then came I. Summers, with N. Jacobsen off scratch. G. Laing led for about 2 miles, being caught in the last half mile by S. Pickett, who went on to win narrowly from Laing with I. Summers third. N. Jacobsen was fourth. The seniors took part in a 5-mile race. C. Summers (off Bmin) was first away, followed 3 minutes later by O. Gaskin. Then came L. Bird with W. Teahan next and L. Frances behind him. W. Burns led the back-markers off lmin, followed by W. Macdonald with R. Greeks off scratch. At the end of the first lap Summers still held the lead from O. Gaskin with W. iTeahan and L. Francis running together next. In a desperate finish over the last 100 yards Burns challenged Gaskin to win by inches. W. Macdonald filled third place with L. Frances close behind. Then came W. Teahan, C. Summers and L. Bird. Detailed results: W. Burns (lmin) 39.10, 1; O. Gaskin (smin) 39.12, 2; W. Macdonald (45sec) 39.19, 3; L. Frances (3min) 39.25, 4; W. Teahan (3.15) 39.55, 5; C. Summers (Bmin) 41.45, 6. Fastest times: W. Macdonald, 32.4, 1; W. Burns, 32.10, 2; L. Frances, 34.25, 3; W. Teahan, 35.10, 4. At the conclusion of the race runners and supporters were entertained at afternoon tea at the Epiphany Hall. Mr A. L. Askew, the club president, officially closed the season. Mr R. Shaw said that both clubs from now on must concentrate on encouraging the junior runners. Mr G. Sykes also briefly spoke. The trophies won during the season were then presented by Mrs J. Robertson and Mr A. L. Askew, as follows: Albert Cox Cup, R. Greeks; S. A. Mills Trophy, R. Greeks; 3J miles Junior Championship, N. Jacobsen; Turnbull Cup, N. Jacobsen; Novice Challenge Cup, W. Teahan; Mr R. Liverton’s “Rewanui Cup”, W. Burns; Charles Bell Cup, W. Macdonald; Mrs R. C. Falloon’s Rose Bowl, W. Teahan; Carter-Scrimshaw Trophy, Al Macdonald; Mrs Burns’s Trophy, L. Frances; Mrs Bunrs’s Junior Trophy, A. Pickett; S. L. Rutherford Trophy, W. Burns; W. Macdonald Points Prize for juniors, N. Jacobsen; Mr A. Summers’s Trophy for Saturday’s race, W. Burns; second in Saturday’s race, O. Gaskin; first in Saturday’s junior race, S. Pickett; second in junior race, G. Laing; fastest time trophy in senior race, W. Macdonald; consolation prize for last man home in junior and senior races, N. Jacobsen and L. Bird, respectively. After the presentation of the trophies Mrs Robertson spoke briefly on the •benefit of the sport in building up stamina and character. A very successful season was brought to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
