DOUBLE ACCIDENT

AN UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE FOUR CARS IN MOTOR SMASH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An unusual double accident in which a car collided with another vehicle that had previously been involved in a collision, occurred on the main highway two miles north of Waikanae last evening. Several people, including bystanders at the first accident, were injured, and three of them were sent to hospital. The injured included Miss Gould matron of the Otaki Children’s Health Camp, who was admitted to Palmerston North Hospital with a compound fracture of her right leg; Mr Neate the father of Dr F. A. H. Neate (Otaki), who received a fracture of both bones in the left leg; and Mr W. H. Wills (Otaki), former principal of the Otaki Maori College. Mr Neate and Mr Wills were admitted to a private hospital in Levin. It is understood that their injuries are not serious.

The first accident occurred at about 6.45 p.m., when Dr Neate’s car, which was travelling north, struck a stationary vehicle. Dr Neate was slightly injured, but was not admitted to hospital. He had several passengers in his car, one of them being Mr Wills. Two others in the doctor’s car were also slight injured. They were Mr Max Fielding (Otaki), Mr Stanley Elliott (Otaki), who received a partial fracture of the jaw, and Mr Kohe Winterburn (Otaki), who received injuries to his nose and mouth.

While the first accident was being attended to, another car, driven by Mr William A. Paris( Palmerston North), and also travelling north, struck Dr Neates’ car. Miss Gould, ’who was standing on the road at the time, had driven Dr Neate’s father to the scene of the original smash. Mr Neate was also standing on the road when the second accident occured. Mr Paris had four passengers in his car, some of whom were slightly injured. Two of the cars were extensively damaged.
