MASTERTON SAVAGE CLUB
LAST OFFICIAL KORERO OF SEASON. Although there will be a floor members' korero in a fortnight, Saturday’s korero of the Masterton Savage Club was the last official one for the season and was well attended. The National Anthem and Opening Ode preceded the installation of Savage W. G. Perry as Chief of the evening by Big Chief V. S. Wilton. The orchestra (under Savage C. W. Kerry) rendered “Fascination” and “Starlit Night Serenade.” Savage C. Torr also delighted his hearers with two vocal numbers. Some anecdotes, which had the merit of beiiig true, were amusingly related by Savage Kent-Johnston. A cleverly arranged musical monologue was presented by Savages R. Russell and Mexted, followed by the evergreen Harry Hall in some excellent numbers. After the introduction of the visitors by Deputy Chief F. L. Price, the patriotic funds effort was again presented, resulting in over £5 for the night. This brings the season’s total to £46 18s Id. which has been distributed mainly between the Red Cross Appeal and the Provincial Patriotic Committee Zone B, with a little for parcels for club members overseas with the forces. “The Visitors” was proposed by Deputy Chief F. L. Price and replied to by Mr J. Evans (Pahiatua) on behalf of himself and the other visitors, Sapper F. Welch (Trentham), Mr Thomas (Carterton), Mr Cathcart (Wellington), Mr Grantham (Masterton) and Mr R. Jones (Wellington). "Musical Switch" and "Grand March Majesty” by the orchestra opened the second half. Songs by Savage J. Connell pleased the audience. Associated in a laughter-provoking sketch called "A Certainty” were Savages Hemmingsen, Curtin and Kennedy. Savage Hemmingsen finished the programme with a vocal number, then the Closing Ode and “The King.”
