MEETING OF GOVERNORS GIFTS TO LIBRARY. ATTENDANCES AT EVENING CLASSES. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was held at the College last night. The chairman. Mr W. R. Nicol presided. There were also present: Mrs J. L. Hair, Messrs A. Owen Jones, F. C. Daniell, F. M. Whyte, G. C. L. Dickel, .L. T. Daniell and T. Hanley. An apology for absence was received from Mr J. D. O'Connor. Gifts to the school library from the Education Department. Masterton Borough Council, Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland, Mr C. Potter and the Dr. Trimble Estate were acknowledged with thanks. The Principal. Mr G. G. Hancox, reported that the day and evening classes resumed on Monday, September 9. The roll numbers for the first fortnight in the present term were 466 and 459. The attendance at the evening school was being affected to some extent, by young men going into the Territorial camp or enlisting for overseas service and by young women giving their evening's to some form of war or emergency activity, but on the whole the roll was being well maintained. There were 41 boarders at school house. The fifth annual quadrangular Rugby tournament was held on the College grounds on August 17 and 19, the winners being Dannevirke High School. Mr Hancox wished to express his thanks tc all who assisted in the way of billeting etc. The first Rugby fifteen won the third grade competition and the second fifteen were runners-up in the fourth grade. The first boys' hockey eleven had won the third grade, competition, and had taken part in the secondary schools’ tournament at Auckland during the term holidays. The junior girls’ A and B hockey teams beat Hutt Valley by 3 to 1 and 2 to nil respectively. Winter games had finished and tennis and athletics had commenced. General improvement and maintenance work had been carried out as weather permitted. In connection with term and vacation dates for 1941 the following recommendations by Mr Hancox were adopted:— Day school: First term, from Tuesday, February 4, to Friday, May 9. Holidays, Masterton Show, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Easter Tuesday, Anzac Day. Second term, Tuesday, May 27, to Friday, August 22. Holiday, King's Birthday. Third term, Monday, September 15 to Wednesday, December 17. Holidays. Labour Day, Wairarapa P. and A. Show. The year would end earlier than shown if the minimum requirements of 380 half days was completed before December 17. Evening school: First term, Monday, February 17 to Friday, May 9. Holidays, Easter Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day. Second term, Monday, May 26, to Friday, August 15. Holiday, King's Birthday. Third term, Monday, August 18, to Friday, November 21. Holidays, September 1 and September 12 (Labour Day).
